Kate Middleton and Prince William have been been awarded 100,000 euros (£92k / $199k) in damages after a French magazine printed topless pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge.

A French court ruled the images, which were taken in 2012 when the Royal couple were holidaying in Provence, were an invasion of their privacy.

The judge awarded the pair 50,000 euros each in damages for the images, taken the year after their wedding.

The pictures of Kate were taken with telephoto lenses as she and her husband were sunbathing on a patio at a private estate in France's southern Provence region.

Three photographers and three newspaper executives were ruled to have invaded the privacy of the Duchess, with the editor and owner of Closer Closer magazine fined 45,000 euros - the maximum amount allowed.

The damages fall short of the 1.6 million euros (£1.5m / $1.9m) sought by William and Kate's lawyers.

Back in May, a written declaration, read out on Prince William's behalf by the couple's lawyer Jean Veil, described how the invasion of privacy was 'all the more painful' given the circumstances of his mother Princess Diana's death - she died after being pursued by paparazzi in 1997.

He said: "My wife and I thought that we could go to France for a few days in a secluded villa owned by a member of my family, and thus enjoy our privacy.

"We know France and the French, and we know that they are, in principle, respectful of private life, including that of their guests."

He added: "The clandestine way in which these photographs were taken was particularly shocking to us as it breached our privacy."

Earlier this week it was announced by Kensington Palace that William and Kate are expecting their third child.

They already have two children: George, born in July 2013, and Charlotte, born in May 2015.
