Hurricane Matthew has devastated Florida, with six people reported dead so far and whole towns under water.

Seven foot waves have been battering parts of the east coast and warnings have been put in place for tornadoes and flash flooding. One million people are currently without electricity.

This comes after 842 people reportedly lost their lives from the hurricane in Haiti earlier this week. Reportedly 350,000 people are desperately in need of humanitarian aid. It has also severely affected other areas in the Caribbean region, including Cuba.

The hurricane swept through Georgia at 8pm US time last evening and reached South Carolina at 1am. Winds of up to 100 miles per hour were recorded and waves up to seven feet high.

Charleston airport has been closed, and will remain so today.

Forecasters are hopeful that the storm will leave North Carolina tonight and loop back into the Atlantic.

However, the governor of Florida, Rick Scott, explained that even when the storm has passed, it will create waves as high as nine feet in some parts of the coastal regions of the state. He also urged caution.

"Let's remember this storm has not passed. There is no victory lap. It's still in our state. Hopefully the storm is going to finish with us tonight but we have to be cautious. We worked hard to be prepared, now let's be cautious."

Please stay safe.
