Three young women have been injured after a bridge they were standing on collapsed. The women were posing for selfies on the run-down bridge in Northeastern Brazil when the bridge gave way and they fell more than 30 feet.

The women - two of whom are teenagers - suffered multiple fractures as a result of the accident.

Reports suggest that the side of the bridge fell away as the women posed for photos on top of the former railway bridge and plunged the women, aged 22, 15, and 26, into the valley below.

The local authorities in the borough of Castelo do Piaui have released a photo of the three women and a fourth friend that appears to have been taken on the same day just before the bridge collapse.

The photo shows the women smiling and joking on top of the disused railway bridge as a fourth woman holds the camera to take the selfie.

Local policeman Marcelo Freitas told the media: "The bridge passes over the Cais River and is used as a railroad, although it has been in a state of disrepair for some time.

"The young women were taking photos when a section of the bridge came away and they fell to the ground below.

"Fortunately, the trio survived and were rescued by emergency services."

At the time of the terrifying incident there are thought to have been eight people on the bridge, although only the three women were injured in the fall.

They were incredibly lucky not to be more seriously injured after falling from the bridge, which spans more than 10 metres above the Cais river. Two of the girls suffered multiple fractures to their legs and the other broke her foot.

They were treated at a local medical facility and then taken through the night to another hotel, the Hospital Teresina, which is more than 190 kilometres (118 miles) away.

According to the local government the bridge is supposed to be under the jurisdiction of the federal government with regards to its maintenance and safety. They have contacted the Ministry of Transport and are awaiting a reply from them.

In 2014 an unfinished road bridge collapsed in the city of Belo Horizonte and killed 2 people, injuring 22.
