Islamic State group has taken responsibility for yesterday's attack in London.

Speaking through its news agency, Aaamaq, IS said that the attacker was a 'solider of the Islamic State'.

It added that the person "carried out the operation in response to calls for targeting citizens of the coalition."

The man, who has not yet been named, was a British citizen and had been investigated by MI5 in the past over 'extremism fears'.

Prime Minister Theresa May said: "His identity is known to the police and MI5 and when operational considerations allow, he will be publicly identified.

"What I can confirm is that the man was British-born and that some years ago he was once investigated by MI5 in relation to concerns about violent extremism.

"He was a peripheral figure. The case is historic. He was not part of the current intelligence picture.

"There was no prior intelligence of his intent or of the plot."

Eight people have been arrested during police raids in London and Birmingham and are believed to be linked to the attack.
