It can be hard to come to terms with a break-up. Indeed, the way in which people handle being dumped often reflects the reason why they were dumped in the first place.

Dumped for drinking too much? Get drunk to commiserate. Dumped for being too aggressive? Punch a hole in the wall. Dumped for not caring enough? Laugh in their face.

Continuing in this vein, meet Cesar Arnoldo Gomez - after getting dumped for being too jealous, he had to be rescued from a tunnel he'd dug to spy on his ex.

The 50-year-old had been in a relationship with Griselda Santillan for 14 years and was clearly finding it difficult getting over her. He was rescued from a makeshift tunnel outside Santillan's home in Oriente, Puerto Penasco, in the north-western Mexican state of Sonora on Thursday.

According to reports, 58-year-old Santillan had heard unusual sounds coming from outside her home for about a week, but she had assumed it was just stray animals. However, these noises became more intense and Santillan went to investigate.

Speaking to EI Universal, she said: "I asked a neighbour to look inside and they said there was nothing there, but then I noticed some shoes, tools and water. I shouted at him to get out, but he did not do anything."

Gomez was reportedly reluctant to leave the tunnel.

Red Cross Staff and firefighters retrieved him from the tunnel, though he did not want to leave and had to be dragged out. Civil Protection official Francisco Javier Carrillo Ruiz said that Gomez had been stuck for more than 24 hours and rescuers had a hard time removing him from the narrow tunnel.

Gomez was subsequently taken to hospital where he was treated for dehydration.

In digging the spy tunnel, he was reportedly in breach of a restraining order prohibiting him from approaching Santillan.

Gomez was apparently dumped for being too jealous.

You have to wonder what Gomez was hoping to achieve in a best case scenario here, but I suppose when you resolve to dig a tunnel to spy on your ex, you've probably not got your best thinking head on.

Gomez is certainly not the first to take drastic measures to be near to his ex though. Earlier this month, a woman in Pennsylvania, USA, found her ex-boyfriend had been secretly living in her attic. Yikes.
