A man has been sentenced to six months in prison after he was filmed hitting a woman outside a busy café in Paris.

Marie Laguerre, 22, said the man, who has only been identified as 25-year-old Firaz M under French laws, threw an ashtray at her and slapped her after she shouted at him to stop harassing her.

Laguerre said the man made sexual comments to her and noises that had 'sexual connotations', with the incident taking place in July. The CCTV footage of the assault went viral after Laguerre shared it on Facebook, with an explanation of what happened.

In the shocking clip the man can be seen walking up to the woman, before slapping her, in front of shocked on-lookers sat outside the café. One man shoots up and grabs a chair as he approaches the man, who seemingly attempts to walk off. After the clip went viral, Laguerre set up a website where she encouraged women to share their stories of harassment.

Yesterday, Firaz was sentenced to six months and given a €2,000 (£1,770 / $2,300) bill for damages after being found guilty of 'violence with the use or threat of a weapon'. He has also been told he cannot contact the victim and has been ordered to take part in a gander-related violence course, and additionally must see a psychologist, the BBC reports.

During the trial, prosecutors told the court the man was 'violent and impulsive'.

However, prosecutors say there was not enough evidence to change the man with sexual harassment, something which has left the victim feeling 'disappointed'.

Speaking to Libération, she said: "My attacker will not be able to understand the misogynistic and sexist nature of what he is accused of.

"We are missing out on teaching him a lesson to make him aware that it's no longer possible to treat women like pieces of meat."

The French government has introduced laws to hand out on-the-spot fines of up to €750 (£660 / $870) ) to anyone caught harassing people on the street.

The first one of these fines was given to a man who had slapped a woman's bum in Paris last month.
