Many parents choose to give their kids an extra special present on their 18th birthday, something that will always make their offspring think of them. Perhaps a family heirloom or a nice watch.

However, one mum in Australia decided to gift her son with something very different to slip on - and a lot of people think it's a bit weird.

Is gifting your son a jar of condoms, booze and chewing gum weird?

The Sydney-based mother put together a bespoke jar for her boy on his 18th, containing johnnies, booze and chewing gum. Keen for the world to know about her unusual gifting, she shared a pic of the prezzie on a Kmart Facebook group.

However, the johnny jar didn't quite get the rapturous reception the mum was hoping for.

One person said: "You bought your son a variety of condoms for his birthday? Is it just me or is that weird."

Another added: "I'm all for teaching your kids safe sex but this seems to go too far. Imagine him opening this gift in front of all his friends."

A third added: "Who wants condoms from their mum and who wants them as a present? Happy birthday son, now go have a s**g."

But the mum was clearly shocked that everyone didn't think the birthday present was bloody brilliant, describing the 'it's weird to gift your child condoms brigade' as 'prudes'.

In a subsequent post, she said: "I didn't think I would get this much hate from so many prudes. Sorry to those that aren't able to have an open relationship with their teenagers.

"I was a teen mum and I want to make sure all my kids are protected and know where to go if they have any questions.

"With so many unwanted pregnancies especially in young teens it's not just the girls' problem, it's also the boys.

"We all have sex get over it. Stop making it such a taboo subject."

The mum defended her unorthodox gift.

She also added that her son 'still has his Vcard', which really is the cherry on the unwelcome and weird birthday cake.

However, there were many others who supported the mum and her bizarre birthday jar.

One person said: "Good on you for having an open and honest relationship with your kids! Our family is the same."

Another commented: "I think it's a great idea... he's a teen... good on you for promoting safe sex and not just ignoring it like it's never gonna happen."

Let's just hope he remembers to thank his mother once he's done with them.
