The brother of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar has said that Netflix needs to make changes to its security protocol in the wake of a location scout's death over the weekend.

Mexican location manager Carlos Muñoz Portal was shot to death in Mexico last week while scouting for season four of Netflix's show, Narcos.

Now, speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, 71-year-old Roberto De Jesus Escobar Gaviria said that Netflix should not film in Colombia without the consent of his company, Escobar Inc.

"I don't want Netflix or any other film production company to film any movies in Medellin or Colombia that relates to me or my brother, Pablo, without authorization from Escobar Inc," he said.

"It is very dangerous. Especially without our blessing. This is my country."

Gaviria was the lead accountant for his brother's empire and known as the 'chief of the hitmen' for the deadly Medellin cartel. However, this is not implying he is connected to Portal's death.

The warning comes after he filed a $1 billion (£739.7m) lawsuit against the streaming service in 2016 for unauthorized usage of content, as he believes he has 'successor-in-interest rights' for his brother's image use.

Asked how Netflix could step up its protection, he said the media company should now use hitmen if it wants to protect its staff from attack.

"You have to eliminate all threats," he said. "When I was walking in the jungle one day, I had a bag with $2 million (£1.5m) in $100 (£74) bills. The army was searching for me and Pablo at this time. Suddenly, we are being shot at.

"Both me and Pablo, along with a few security people, start running towards a small channel of water, we swim away. This was all done without guns.

"If you have the intellect, you don't need to use weapons. If not, you have to. In this case, Netflix should provide hitmen to their people as security."

A friend of Munoz's said that the 37-year-old was killed in a rural area in Mexico, outside of Mexico City. He was reportedly discovered in a vehicle hit with multiple gunshots.

In a statement, Netflix said: "We are aware of the death of Carlos Muñoz Portal, a respected location manager, and offer our condolences to his relatives. The facts are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate what happened."

The veteran scout worked for Stacy Perskie's Mexico City-based production company, Redrum. He had a number of big production credits to his name, including, Sicario, Spectre, Fast & Furious and Apocalypto.
