Images have emerged of a plane engine bursting into flames at John F Kennedy Airport as it was preparing to take-off.

The pictures capture the passenger jet with flames coming from the fuselage while it is stood on the runway.

Steve Coleman, a spokesperson from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said the pilot of an Argentina Airlines aircraft had reported the fire while preparing for take-off.

When rescue trucks arrived on the scene they found no evidence of a fire, but the plane, which was headed to Buenos Aires, was taken away for further investigation.

The fire is believed to have started after the engine overheated. No injuries have been reported and the plane didn't need to be evacuated.

Witnesses at JFK Airport took to social media to share pictures and videos of the incident, with some reporting a 'sudden explosion' before spotting the flames.

New York City Fire Department later tweeted to confirm that the situation was under control.
