Police in Spain have forced a man to push a refrigerator back up a cliff after he was filmed pushing it off the roadside and down a hill.

The man can be seen getting the fridge out of a van before pushing it down the hill, making jokes about recycling as he did so.

"Recycling... Let's recycle it," he and his accomplice can be heard saying in Spanish as the appliance is tipped over.

"Let's see how many flips it can do!"

The original video, which was filmed in the southern Almeria region and has the license plate of the van in clear view, was shared on social media by the Spanish Civil Guard - the Asociación Unificada de Guardias Civiles (AUGC) - who were eventually able to identify the man.

While he is not being named by the AUGC, it has been revealed that he works for a company that distributes domestic appliances.

He was fined €45,000 (£41,000; $50,000), and is currently under investigation.

However, that wasn't everything - as police decided it was time to get even, and made the man retrieve the abandoned fridge from the bottom of the hill.

As he yanked it back up, officers filmed as the punishment unfolded, before uploading the footage to Twitter.

The AUGC told PA: "The investigation is still open, because the Civil Guard discovered that the company [the man works for] could also be committing a crime against nature."

Police said the waste management company that employs the man could also face sanctions for failing to properly dispose of old refrigerators.

The AUGC has also since shared another video of a man throwing a washing machine over a cliff, an incident they say is still under investigation.

One person commented on Twitter saying they hoped washing machine culprit had a similar punishment to those who dumped the fridge, while another disagreed by saying their fine had been 'excessive'.

Another said they wanted the world's inhabitants and institutions to penalise those who 'continue destroying the globe'.
