An alleged thief who nicked an iPhone is now being sought by police after he shared a selfie to his victim's Instagram account.

Officers from Kearny Police in New Jersey shared an extreme close up a man they would like to talk to in connection with the theft of an iPhone on 16 May.

Police are asking for information to help identify this man, who is suspected of stealing an iPhone.

Although not the best, or most flattering, photo, the suspected thief can be seen to have dark eyes, glasses, facial hair and appears to be wearing a green jacket.

Now cops are asking people to share any information which may shed light on the identity of the mysterious Instagram story-poster.

Sharing his photo on Facebook, the force wrote: "Please Like and Share! The Kearny Police Detective Bureau is turning to our Facebook community for assistance in identifying a person of interest in the attached photograph.

"On May 16th a victim reported to the Kearny Police Department that his iPhone had been stolen. Shortly after the theft, a suspect posted the attached photograph of himself on the victim's Instagram story using the stolen device.

"Anyone who can identify the person of interest in this photograph is asked to contact the Kearny Police Detective bureau by e-mailing us at [email protected] or by calling 201-998-1313 (2833). All tips will remain confidential."

The alleged thief reportedly uploaded a selfie to his victim's Instagram account.

Kearny Police posted an update a couple of days later to say that no one had identified the man yet.

This chap isn't the only alleged criminal to have an erm... forgetful moment.

Last month someone left a backpack full of drugs - as well as a card containing his full name and address - on a tram in Bury South, Greater Manchester.

The bag was found on a tram in Bury.

Sharing the photo of the haul, cops wrote: "Police appeal to reunite lost property with its owner. A poor individual has forgotten his rucksack while travelling on the Bury met.

"MCRMetrolink have located the bag and have checked for any ID to reunite the property with its owner and located: 25 tablets, large amount of white powder, small snap bags containing white rocks, snap bags containing white powder and scales.

"Thankfully the owner of the bag was helpful enough to leave his Community Payback card, his name and address." Whoops.

Probably doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to get to the bottom of this one, eh?
