A man is being hunted by police after he reportedly threw acid over an aspiring model and her cousin.

The Evening Standard reports that a tattooed man flung acid through Resham Khan's car window, covering her and her cousin, Jameel Muhktar.

The pair had stopped at a set of red lights on Khan's 21st birthday when the attacker pulled up alongside and carried out the attack, forcing the model to undergo and skin graft and sending Muhktar to hospital, where she was put into an induced coma, according to the Evening Standard.

Police have released a photograph of a man they want to speak to in connection with the attack, 24-year-old John Tomlin.

He's known to frequent the Canning Town area, Evening Standard reports, where the incident took place and is described as white, around 6ft tall, with a stocky build and short fair hair.

"I would like to reassure the public that our continued focus remains on finding the person responsible for this horrendous act of violence," Detective Superintendent Neil Matthews said.

"We will continue to progress these enquiries as quickly as humanly possible and fully understand concerns that they should be brought to justice quickly."

A GoFundMe page was set following the ordeal, to raise money to provide additional support for their family.

"The pain was excruciating, I was struggling to close the window," Khan told the paper.

"My cousin struggled to get us away. I saw my clothes burn in front of me. He put his foot down as we were coming onto a dual carriage way but the pain took over and we crashed.

"We stripped off in the middle of the road, running around screaming and begging for water."

"I'm devastated," she added. "I keep wondering if my life will ever be the same.

"Acid attacks in the UK are unheard of for me."
