Five prison guards at a maximum security prison in Delaware have been taken hostage by inmates.

All state prisons are now on lockdown in light of the incident.

It has been described as 'isolated' and 'no threat to the public', a Department of Correction spokesman said.

Geoff Klopp, President of the Correctional Officers Association, told Delaware State News: "We're hearing that three to five correctional officers have been taken hostage and the inmates have control of the building."

The facility was immediately put on lockdown after it was reported Wednesday morning.

Police officers now surround the scene, as well as circling helicopters above. Ambulances and firemen are also present.

The prison is Delaware's largest, with a population of 2,5000.
