Singer Tom Petty has reportedly been rushed to hospital after he was found unconscious in his California home.

TMZ reports that he wasn't breathing when emergency services arrived and was in cardiac arrest.

He's reportedly been taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and has been placed on life support.

The 'Free Fallin' singer had recently wrapped up a world tour, which included 53 shows in the US, Canada and the UK. He had two shows left to complete in November in New York, however it's unclear whether he'll be able to make those performances.

The news has sent shockwaves through people on social media, including his musical colleagues.

He recently performed in the UK at the British Summertime Series, joining Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks on stage to sing 'Don't Back Down' and 'Free Fallin'.

This year's 40th anniversary world tour was likely to be the last for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Tom told Rolling Stone: "I'm thinking it may be the last trip around the country. It's very likely we'll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don't think so. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was thinking this might be the last big one.

"We're all on the backside of our sixties. I have a granddaughter now I'd like to see as much as I can. I don't want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that's a lot of time."

The 66-year-old was most notably know for songs such as 'I Won't Back Down', 'Runnin' Down a Dream' and 'American Girl'. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released 10 studio albums and were nominated for more than a dozen awards, winning three Grammys, three MTV Video Music awards, and the singer was also given the Billboard Music Century Award and Radio Music Legend Award.

He was also instrumental in putting together the group The Travelling Willburys, which involved Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Rob Orbison. They released two albums in 1988 and 1990, with the first charting in the top three in the US, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.

It was revealed in 2015 that Lynne and Petty would receive a portion of the royalties from Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me' track, after the writers acknowledged there were similarities with 'I Won't Back Down'. But Petty told Rolling Stone: "All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen.

"Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam's people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement."
