We've got a lot to be thankful for in this day and age. Open discussion of mental health, access to the Internet, affordable air travel, the NHS, M&Ms... and then there's Stan Lee.

So when we heard that Stan, the former boss of Marvel Comics and all-round legend, had been threatened by gunmen outside his house in L.A., we were pretty pissed off.

How dare you mess with our Stan?! Especially outside his own sodding house.

Thankfully, he's safe and well, after police stormed his Hollywood Hills home.

Police were called to the scene at around 7.30pm last night, where two armed men were allegedly threatening the 95-year-old Marvel veteran.

Along with artist Steve Ditko, Stan Lee created Spider-Man.

The men threw their guns away before police arrived, but the weapons were retrieved quickly. Both men were detained but it's not yet known whether they remain in custody or not.

According to a witness, one of the men was shouting about money that Lee owed him.

A source told the Daily Mail, "There was a confrontation with Stan in front of his house, but Stan doesn't know either of them. One guy was saying, 'I want my money.'

"But when everyone realised the men had guns everyone retreated inside. Stan's lawyer, business partner and a nurse were with him at the house. At some point the men took out their guns and were pointing them around so the police were called."

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said: "Officers were called to a property... after reports of an assault. It was claimed that a suspect had a gun and was threatening.

"Officers detained two individuals that matched the description and an investigation is ongoing."

Witnesses have said that 20 police showed up, with police helicopters also surveying the area.

Comic and film fans alike love Stan Lee for creating much of the Marvel universe and its heroes, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, and Black Panther.

He has also popped up in cameo roles in all 19 Marvel films so far - spotting him's become something of a tradition when watching the new films.

Stan sadly lost his wife Joan last year, and police were called to his home in April after an intruder tried to break into his house. Rough 12 months.

BRB. We're off to volunteer as Stan's bodyguards.
