The repair fund for Notre Dame Cathedral has topped a whopping one billion Euros just two days after the historic building was left partially destroyed by a huge fire.

Stephane Bern, who helped launch the appeal, said earlier today: "The billion-euro mark of donations was reached during the day."

French companies - including L'Oreal and LVMH - have pledged millions towards the restoration of the cathedral.

Other high-rolling donors include billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault and France's richest man Bernard Arnault.

Meanwhile, Air France has offered free flights to any experts who need to be flown in to help with the renovation and restoration efforts.

French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to rebuild the cathedral in five years - and now with the money flying in it looks likely that will happen.

Macron said: "We will rebuild Notre Dame even more beautifully and I want it to be completed in five years, we can do it.

"It is up to us to change this disaster into an opportunity to come together, having deeply reflected on what we have been and what we have to be and become better than we are. It is up to us to find the thread of our national project."

However, he also warned: "Let us not fall into the trap of haste."
