"She had an extraordinary life, and we will always remember her strength to help us move forward in life," the mayor of Verbania was quoted as saying.
She attributed her longevity to good genes and a diet of three eggs a day, two raw, for 90 years.
Morano was the final survivor of the 19th century.
She was one of eight children, with five sisters and three brothers, and lived through two World Wars.

Morano was also known for walking away from an abusive husband in 1938 when divorce was frowned upon. She told La Stampa that she didn't want to be 'dominated'.
She stayed single for the rest of her life, attributing her good health to her diet and lack of husband according to The New York Times.
