Theresa May has announced she will form a government after meeting with the Queen.

Speaking outside Number 10 the Prime Minister said she intends to join up with the Democratic Unionist Party, which will provide 'certainty' while guiding the UK through Brexit talks.

She said she will work with her 'friends' in the Democratic Unionist Party in the 'interests of the whole UK'.

The PM was joined by her husband when she made the announcement, following last night's election, which saw her party lose the majority, meaning she had no choice but to join up with another party or hand over power to Labour.

She travelled to Buckingham Palace to ask the Queen's permission to form a new government, before making the announcement.

May said: "I will now form a government - a government that can provide certainty and lead Britain forward at this critical time for our country.

"This government will guide the country through the crucial Brexit talks that begin in just ten days' time."

The leader of the DUP, Arlene Foster, says she wants to 'bring stability to our nation' by joining up with May and the Conservatives.

Speaking this afternoon, she said she was still in discussions with May over the details of the arrangement.

She said: "In the days and weeks ahead, it is the union that will go to the forefront of our minds. The union is our guiding star. We may represent Northern Ireland constituencies in the House of Commons, but we are as seized of the interests of the United Kingdom as a whole as we are for Northern Ireland.

"The Prime Minister has spoken with me this morning and we will enter discussions with the Conservatives to explore how it may be possible to bring stability to our nation at this time of great challenge."

The party has offered its support in return for more 'resources' for Northern Ireland and a bigger say in trade deals and Brexit talks, the Independent reports.
