The BBC drama Three Girls has led to increased interest into the Rochdale grooming scandal, and it has been discovered that one of the offenders, who was jailed for trafficking and conspiracy to engage in a sexual activity, is still living in the Greater Manchester town.

Qari Abdul Rauf was released in 2015 after serving half of his six-year sentence. He is now living on benefits, and visiting his wife and five children who live close to two schools according to the Sun.

"No one could believe it when he first popped up. I know he is entitled to see his kids but you would think that he'd arrange to see them away from the road," said a shocked neighbour.

"There are loads of kids around here and two schools and he sometimes walks. Everyone knows who he is and we've all pointed him out to our children."

Forty-six year old Rauf is also depending on tax payer money to fight his case to be deported back to Pakistan.

In 2012, nine men were convicted of running a child sex ring in Rochdale and Oldham. Their offences ranged from rape to conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children. Eight of the men were originally from Pakistan and another was from Afghanistan.

In court, it was discovered the nine men got their victims drunk and passed them round at restaurants they owned and managed.

Some of the girls were as young as 13.

All but two have now been released from prison - and are now facing deportation.

Shabir Ahmed, 64, along with Adil Khan, Qari Abdul Rauf and Abdul Aziz are taking their fight to the Court of Appeal to avoid being deported.

A Home Office spokesman said: "All four men have been granted permission to appeal at the Court of Appeal and it would be inappropriate to comment further on ongoing legal proceedings."

Only Shabir Ahmed, 64, and Mohammed Sajid, 40, who were jailed for 22 years and 12 years respectively, remain behind bars.
