A travel blogging couple have responded to backlash from one of their most recent Instagram posts, in which they posed precariously by an infinity pool.

The American Instagrammers, 33-year-old Kelly Castille and 32-year-old Kody Workman, snapped themselves at an Indonesian jungle resort in Ubud, Bali, for their account called @positravelty - where they often share stunning images from their travels with their 64,000 followers.

Kelly can be seen dangling off the edge of an infinity pool kissing boyfriend Kody, who is stood in the pool and holding her weight.

The caption of the photo warns others not to replicate the pose, telling people that only you can 'understand your capabilities'.

"Our greatest strength in life, our most important principle, is discernment," it says.

"Only you can know your body, feel the space around you and understand your capabilities.

"We would all do well to remember this, knowing that not every action, style or path we witness through others is or should be, replicated.

"At the end of the day we are to hold ourselves accountable for the decisions that we make."

Despite the word of warning, the couple have been slammed by many other social media users, who have deemed the stunt 'dangerous' and set a bad example to followers.

One person commented: "Dumbest thing I've seen today. Imagine if she fell, all for the sake of a little internet fame."

Another said: "What a stupid ridiculous photo. When one of you falls and meets your death than we will see if Instagram was worth it idiots."

A third added: "You know, other people are gonna start dangling themselves from infinity pools and dangerous like this also to get a shot like this. Way to set an example."

Another worried Instagrammer simply commented: "Oooooh my god, looks so dangerous."

However, the couple remain adamant that their set-up was completely safe.

In an interview with Business Insider Kody revealed the image was actually Kelly's idea - and that they both knew what their bodies are capable of.

"We are both in good shape, we know our bodies and in turn, we know our limits," he said.

"We had faith in each other and trust to pull this off and so we made the choice as a team to shoot it."

Kody continued: "There is a lip, where the ridge of the infinity pool juts out over the wall where Kelly could get a solid grip and place her weight on her forearms. I held her the entire time and if zoomed you can actually see my grip on her arm.

"We have both jumped off of waterfalls and bridges much higher than this infinity pool so the height aspect wasn't a concern for us at all.

"Photography is our creative outlet while we travel and as 'creatives,' a term associated with this avenue of social media, we do our best to create content that we love and are proud of, always pushing ourselves to be unique and challenge our perspectives," they said.

While they have faced backlash for the photo, the duo have also received a great deal of support from fans.

"Your life and live it how you want, this is how you guy express your love," one commented on the photo.

"Hang out... ppl are worried about these pictures when there's so many other things to worry about.

Another wrote: "I've been in that place, I know it has pool above and below and I can see that one is supporting herself and the other is on top of that holding, so I wouldn't say it's life threatening. You did an amazing job with that picture."

Someone else added: "Feeling like the picture depicts the trust and strength of love you have for each other. Kelly trusts Kody enough and Kody knows that he's strong enough to hold her not to fall. Just have to say it. And yes there's another pool underneath, check out the resort ig! Nice pic!"

Happy (safe) Instagramming, kids!
