President Trump's travel ban on six countries will be able to go into full effect following a ruling by the US Supreme Court.

The justices, with two dissenting votes out of nine, granted the administration's request to lift injunctions imposed by lower courts blocking the ban.

The ban applies to travellers from the mainly Muslim countries of Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.

President Trump has issued three versions of the controversial policy since taking office in January, however the action suggests that the version of the ban announced in September will be upheld by the courts.

The new ruling puts on hold prior decisions by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and a federal district court in Maryland that had said the President could only block nationals if they lacked a provable relationship with a person or entity in the United States.
