Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, Vanessa Trump, was reportedly hospitalised on Monday morning after opening a letter with an unidentified white powder inside.

The 40-year-old wife of Donald Trump Jr. was at her apartment on East 54th Street in Manhattan. At around 10am she opened a letter that was apparently addressed to her husband, finding inside a mysterious white powder.

She and two other people were decontaminated by firefighters at the scene, before she was taken to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center for precaution, according to New York City Fire Department officials.

ABC News reports that officials have stated that Vanessa Trump is in 'fine' health after the incident.

"The substance was deemed to be non-hazardous and is being transported to a lab in New York City for further analysis," NYPD spokesman Peter Donald said.

According to the BBC, in September Trump Jr chose to forgo Secret Service protection for himself, his wife and their five children for more privacy. However, it was reactivated one week later.

Donald Trump Jr. is the eldest of Donald Trump's children, and works for his father's business - according to his Twitter profile, as the EVP of Development & Acquisitions The Trump Organization.

In November 2005 he married Vanessa in a wedding at the president's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. Before the marriage, former Miss USA contestant Vanessa (née Vanessa Kay Haydon) had been working as a model in New York, having appeared in TV commercials as well as the film Something's Gotta Give alongside Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton.

The two met when Trump's father introduced him to Vanessa at a fashion show in 2003. The then-26-year-old eventually proposed, having managed to blag a free engagement ring from jewellery store Bailey, Banks & Biddle in exchange for promotional activity. After the media stunt, the New York Post ran an article with the headline: 'Trump Jr. Is the Cheapest Gazillionaire: Heirhead Proposes With Free 100G Ring'.

Together they have five children - daughters Kai, 10, and Chloe, three, and sons Donald III, eight, Tristan, six, and Spencer, five.

Authorities have been on alert for mail containing white powder ever since envelopes laced with deadly anthrax were sent to media outlets and U.S. lawmakers in 2001, killing five people and infecting many others. The attacks took place just weeks after 9/11, and since then there have also been countless anthrax hoaxes.
