A lot of things about gangs get exaggerated, especially when by dopey kids who think they're 'gangsta' when they actually live in nice suburbs with their parents. Sure, you wouldn't fuck with the Crips or the Bloods, but if you posted something about them on the internet, we doubt they'd come and get you.

Not so in Mexico, however. The Mexican cartel are as dangerous - maybe even more so - than you could possibly imagine. That's something Mexican YouTube star Juan Luis Lagunas Rosales, also known as El Pirata de Culiacan, sadly found out.

According to Mexican news Facebook page Guardia Nocturna, Rosales - who had more than 260,000 followers on Instagram and almost a million likes on Facebook - was shot dead by four assassins in a bar called Menta2 Cantaros after poking fun at a cartel leader in one of his videos.

Just hours earlier he'd invited people via a public video to join him at the bar, which probably isn't the smartest thing to do when you've recently made a video that made fun of El Mencho, aka Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generació (Jalisco New Generation Cartel).

But it seems that Rosales lived a pretty reckless life. Known to have problems with alcohol, he had sprung to fame in 2015 after a video of him drinking a bottle of vodka and then falling over went viral.

Reports state that 15 shots were fired by four assassins with 'long guns'. A woman sitting with him was also hit, and is in a private hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

In the wake of the news, the YouTube star's fans expressed their grief at what had happened via social media. Perhaps the most telling tweet was from KandyKaneKat who wrote: "he was wild af but still didn't deserve that."

Drug cartels are a huge - and very real - problem in Mexico. So if you're ever over there, it's probably better to not even joke about them, even if you think nobody is listening. Because, well, you never know.
