Haters of stories about being impaled through the arse look away now, because this is a story about a man who found himself impaled - through the arse.

The construction worker in Chenzhou, China, fell six feet onto a rusty bar which went through his backside and up to his chest. He was immediately taken to hospital.

As reported in The Mirror, the 64-year old's colleagues said he lost his footing while working on a platform and landed on a 'rebar', used to reinforce concrete, before being taken to First People's Hospital.

A doctor at the hospital said about 24 inches of the steel bar went through the man's buttocks, stopping in his chest cavity.

Firefighters on the scene cut off some of the metal and remained on standby while the man underwent six hours of emergency surgery before the bar was finally removed.

X-ray photos show the severity of his injury, and luck to have survived, with the bar travelling through most of the man's upper body.

The construction worker suffered damage to organs including his liver, but remains in a stable (albeit critical) condition, with his breathing aided by medical ventilation.

China has had huge difficulties with workplace accidents, to the extent that a government crackdown was introduced to try and reduce the number of injuries that occur.

The high number of accidents has been blamed on poor safety regulation, insufficient implementation of health and safety rules and a fast growing economy which puts pressure on construction works to be completed

However, last year the number of incidents fell by nearly a quarter and there are signs that safety on Chinese building sites is improving.
