Fires in France have forced the evacuation of 10,000 people from their homes overnight, BBC News reports.

France have asked EU neighbours for help battling the wildfires in the south-east, as hundreds of firefighters attempt to combat the blaze, near Bormes-les-Mimoses, in the country's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

According to the BBC, 4,000 hectares (15.4 sq miles) of land have been burned along the Mediterranean coast.

"The evacuations, at least 10,000, followed the progression of the fire," an official told the AFP news agency. "It's an area that doubles or triples its population in summer."

The battle against the flames has been raging since Monday, during which 4,000 fireman and soldiers have collectively attempted to put it out, helped by water bombers.

The BBC reports that 12 firefighters have been injured and at least 15 police officers have been affected by smoke inhalation.

Many tourists staying in and around St-Tropez were evacuated from campsites early in the morning, having to move to the beach away from wooded areas. A reported 3,000 people were left on the beach in cold winds.

Lisa Minot, a British tourist, told the BBC that people were extremely tired as they watched planes scooping up water from the sea and then going back 'into the pool of black smoke'.

Young children were also reported to have been among the evacuees.
