A woman has been arrested in California for following a mixed-race family and harassing them by shouting 'you don't belong here' at them.

Lauren Milewski, 31, also grabbed members of the family and hurled abuse at them during the incident in Berkeley, California.

30-year-old Essex Cook was out walking with his family on Memorial Day weekend when Milewski began following them very closely.

Assuming that she wanted to get past, he stopped and tried to allow her to go by. It soon became apparent that she didn't simply want to walk past them.

Milewski was filmed saying: "You don't belong here. Get out of Berkeley. Get out of here. You don't belong anywhere."

According to Essex, Milewski, who is believed to have been drunk, addressed most of her comments to him. He believes that this is because of his darker skin tone.

The whole time this was going on, Essex's cousin and girlfriend tried to calm her down and de-escalate the situation to no avail. Milewski then allegedly grabbed the hair and clothes of Essex's cousin, and tore the shirt of Essex's girlfriend, as well as scratching her chest.

All the while, the couple's 15-month-old baby was in a stroller nearby.

Elexia, the cousin mentioned earlier, said that it took a while before any people who were nearby intervened with the woman to stop her abusing the family.

She said: "We were so loud and people were walking by not even making a noise, trying not to look at us, acting like they didn't even notice.

"It just made me feel very uncomfortable."

Eventually, a white family intervened and stopped Milewski spouting her remarks at them. They also called the police and waited around until they arrived so that they could back up their story to the police.

Essex Cook said that he was initially wary about involving the police because he thought that they might take Milewski's side. Sure enough, when the police arrived she tried to make out that the family had assaulted her.

Luckily, the police didn't take her side. One of the police officers who arrived at the scene recognised her and she was eventually arrested and charged with public intoxication.

On top of that, she was found to be in violation of her probation. She had an existing theft charge for which she served time in jail, before being released with 5 years of probation.

In the end, the Cook family decided not to press charges against her.
