A woman has pleaded guilty to third degree murder after sitting on her boyfriend and crushing him to death.

Forty-four-year-old Windi C. Thomas admitted to killing her partner Keenon Butler, 44, at their home in Erie, Pennsylvania in March, GoErie.com reports.

The case had been scheduled to go to trial on 10 December, however, Thomas admitted to third degree murder - an unpremeditated killing with malice - before it got to court. She is now facing 18-36 years in prison; before she made a plea deal, she'd been looking at between 20 and 40 years.

Thomas told cops that, at the time of the killing, she had been drinking and looking to buy crack cocaine when the couple got into an altercation.

She said she initially stabbed Butler in the hand, before hitting him around the head with a table leg. Thomas then went on to tell investigators that she sat on the victim's chest.

In affidavit, cops wrote that Thomas weighs around 300lbs/136kg and Butler about 120lbs/54kg at the time of his death.

It went on to state that his death was ruled as a homicide 'caused by respiratory insufficiency secondary to blunt force trauma to the neck and thoracic compression, exacerbated by blunt force trauma to the head'.

Thomas called 911 and told the call handler she had killed someone, upon arrival cops found Butler's body on the floor of the living room.

Mark Del Duca, Thomas' attorney, said: "It's a good result based upon the facts of the case. I think it's fair for both sides."

But, speaking to GoErie.com, speaking to GoErie.com, the victim's sister Sandra Butler, said she hoped Thomas would face a longer sentence.

"I feel like she should have 40 or more," she said. "She deserved life."

She went on to say that the family are still struggling to come to terms with the death.

"My mother, she calls for him every night," she said.

In an interview with Erie News Now, Butler said the couple's on/off relationship had been troubled for some time.

She said: "It was something that was going to happen. They even stayed at my house and I asked her, 'don't kill my brother'."

Thomas will be sentenced on 21 December.
