A woman who had a ring stuck up her nose for 12 years got the fright of her life when she sneezed and the missing piece of jewellery flew out. Be warned, there's a fair bit of snot coming your way...

Beautician Abigail Thompson said she noticed something glistening in her snot after blowing her schnoz.

The 20-year-old had thought the ring was gone forever after she lost it on her eighth birthday in 2007 and had thought it had been stolen.

She said: "My mum had bought it for me as a present that year and it was a few months after that I noticed it had gone missing.

"I never ever in a million years would have guessed it had got stuck up my nose."

Abigail added: "I always had a few friends over, we always would sit on my bed and she thought one of them must have just taken it when they were over at my house."

Abigail, of Keighley, West Yorkshire, said she was shocked when she saw the silver ring fly out of her nose after a particularly bad sneezing fit.

She said: "Well it was just a normal day, I was sat on my sofa and I started sneezing loads and then I looked in the tissue and I was like 'What the hell is that?'

"I felt a sharp feeling but I didn't think of it until I looked in the tissue.

"Then I looked at it and I went: 'Oh my God, that's the ring!'"

She added: "My mum was so shocked, I called her straight away when it happened.

"I said 'You'll never guess what?' and she said: 'Oh my God, never'."

Realising the ring wasn't actually stolen, the mum and daughter came to the conclusion that it must have become lodged up there when she was picking her nose.

Abigail joked: "I never had a clue that it was up there. I never felt it.

"I had no problems with breathing growing up, nothing has changed since it has come out either."

She added: "We never went to the doctors or A&E because it never caused any problems."

Abigail and her mum thought the ring had been stolen and were stunned when it flew out of her nose.

And though it's been hidden away in the recesses of her body, the ring is still in surprisingly good nick and even has the diamond still in it.

Dr Naveen Cavale, the Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Real Plastic Surgery, said it's an odd case but not uncommon.

He said: "It doesn't surprise me, it is an unusual story, but kids have beads and toys stuck up their nose all the time.

"It is possible that it was just wedged in and as she has grown up, the space in which it was wedged in would have got bigger and it was able to riggle loose and come out.

"It has probably being wedged at the back of the nose between two hard boney bits and they kept it in place.

"You don't often feel these things stuck at the back as a lot of the parts of the nose to the back, don't have sensation."

How's that for a childhood throwback, eh?
