A woman who had her car nicked turned detective, tracked it down and then took it back.

Danielle Reno, from Missouri, US, was filling her car with petrol at a station in Kansas City when she says someone stole her car with her handbag - including her wallet and mobile phone - still inside.

Danielle Reno tracked down the suspected car thief, took it back and then called police.

After reporting it to the police, Reno, 34, decided to attempt to find it herself and, amazingly, managed to do so.

To try and find where the thief was, Reno re-activated her credit card and then checked to see where recent purchases had been made as well as using the GPS system on her mobile. Clever, eh?

Hot on the trail, Reno got a lucky break when a petrol station worker was able to tell her the suspects had mentioned they were going to a local Applebee's to eat.

Speaking to local news channel KCTV, Reno said: "We stalked this lady for 48 hours. She had no idea what we were doing."

Reno headed for the Applebee's and waited - within just a few minutes, the woman walked in.

"We got out waters and she walked in the door. I about had a heart attack," the amateur sleuth told the news outlet.

Reno than dashed outside where she spotted her Toyota 4Runner and then filmed herself 'stealing' her car back. She then drove off 10 minutes down the road and called the police.

Officers from Clay County Sheriff's Department arrived and arrested the woman and 'an accomplice', which Reno also recorded and shared online.

In the clip she can be heard saying: "Oh my gosh, before I call the cops, I wanted to show you all what we just found by doing our own stalking.

"At Applebee's, my heart's racing. She has my wallet in her hand and my keys in her hand."

The suspect was arrested by cops after the woman tracked her down.

Speaking to Inside Edition, she added: "It was exhilarating. I had the biggest adrenaline rush ever. I was super, super happy."

However, she also said the car had been left in a filthy state.

Reno explained: "There were dirty clothes and underwear all over. It smelt horrible."

In the clip she recorded, she shows the inside of the car, saying: "Look at my back seat. Beer in my back seat. There's stuff on the car seat. There's stuff on the seat. It's just gross."
