YouTuber Etika, whose real name was Demond Amofah, has been found dead, the New York Police Department has confirmed.

Following up a missing person appeal, police said: "We regret to inform that Desmond Amofah aka Etika has been found deceased."

Etika was known for talking about Nintendo games on YouTube and Twitch.

A popular name within the gaming community, he had 133,000 subscribers on YouTube, along with 329,000 Twitter followers and 267,000 on Instagram. His Twitch profile, meanwhile, has been deleted.

The 29-year-old gamer was reported missing six days ago.

His belongings were found on Manhattan Bridge on Monday, with The New York Post reporting that Etika's phone, driving licence, wallet and Nintendo Switch were among the items discovered.

He had shared an eight-minute YouTube upload in which he apparently talked about suicide, with the NYPD's police call-out saying many people were concerned about Etika 'after a recent video'.

According to the BBC, the video had been uploaded at midnight on 19 June (19:00 BST), and was titled 'I'm Sorry'. It has since been removed from YouTube.

The clip featured Etika walking along the streets of New York, as he apologised for pushing people away.

He also confirmed he suffered from mental illness, and discussed the power of social media - advising 'caution' around using it too much.

"It can give you an image of what you want your life to be and get blown completely out of proportion," he said.

"It consumed me."

Etika was a well-known gamer and Youtuber.

Many of Etika's fans and fellow gamers have taken to social media with tributes for the late star with Ali-A tweeting: "My heart goes out to Etika and his family. Rest in peace. Please reach out to friends/family, it's serious, I've heard my parents trying to end their lives while in my room. I've had friends tell me they can't do this anymore. This is serious. Please reach out."

Another wrote: "It truly is shocking news to hear that Etika has passed away. He is and always will be my favorite streamer, no matter what was going on in the world his streams never failed to put a smile on my face and others. He will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on."

Rest in peace.
