Anti-LGBT U.S. Politician Resigns After 'Having Sex With Man In Office'

An anti-LGBT U.S. politician who routinely touted his Christian faith and "family values" has resigned after being caught having extramarital sex with a man in his office.

Wes Goodman, a Republican state legislator in the Ohio House of Representatives, was reportedly spotted having sex with a unidentified man in his state-provided office a few weeks ago.

According to local newspaper the Columbus Dispatch, the observer told the House's Chief of Staff Mike Dittoe what they saw earlier this week, news which was then passed on to the House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger.

The 33-year old right-winger Goodman then met with Rosenberger and resigned for 'inappropriate conduct' shortly after the meeting took place.

"I was alerted to details yesterday afternoon regarding [Goodman's] involvement in inappropriate behaviour related to his state office," Mr Rosenberger said in a statement.

"I met with him later in the day where he acknowledged and confirmed the allegations. It became clear that his resignation was the most appropriate course of action for him, his family, the constituents of the 87th House District and this institution."

Mr Goodman, whose Twitter biography describes him as "Christian. American. Conservative. Republic. Husband", has history of claiming that "natural marriage" takes place solely between a man and a woman.

He was elected to represent the 87th District, in north-Central Ohio, just last year after working as an aide to the highly conservative US Representative Jim Jordan.

Jordan's anti-LGBT stance is very well known, so much so that the Human Rights Campaign, the U.S.' largest LGBT advocacy group, named him in their Hall of Shame in 2014 for trying to block marriage equality.

"Healthy, vibrant, thriving, values-driven families are the source of Ohio's proud history and the key to Ohio's future greatness," said Goodman's campaign website which has now been taken offline.

"The ideals of a loving father and mother, a committed natural marriage, and a caring community are well worth pursuing and protecting."

Goodman had previous form for expressing his commitment to "family values" in a statement he made back in 2013 when he was managing director of the Conservative action project.

"Faith, family, service, stewardship, strong education, and investment in our local communities are what Ohioans value. My wife Bethany and I value those same things and are ready to get to work to serve you," he said.

In addition to their anti-LGBT stance, Goodman and his wife Bethany Goodman are also known for their pro-life stance, as Bethany is assistant director of the annual anti-abortion rally March for Life.

Goodman has now deleted or made private many of his social media accounts and acknowledged his resignation in a statement.

"We all bring our own struggles and our own trials into public life," Goodman said. "That has been true for me, and I sincerely regret that my actions and choices have kept me from serving my constituents and our state in a way that reflects the best ideals of public service."

"For those whom I have let down, I'm sorry," he continued. "As I move onto the next chapter of my life, I sincerely ask for privacy for myself, my family, and my friends."
