You've no doubt heard that tensions between North Korea and the United States are at an all-time high right now and that the heads of those countries have been flexing their muscles - and nuclear weapons - at each other.

And now President Donald Trump has received an invitation to 'discuss' the dangers of nuclear weapons from former astronaut Mark Kelly, who raised his concerns about the escalating tensions via Twitter.

In his New Year's address, North Korean head of state Kim Jong Un had issued a warning towards Donald Trump and the USA, proclaiming that "the nuclear button is always on the desk of my office. They should accurately be aware that this is not a threat but a reality."

Two days later, Donald Trump responded with the following tweet:

The comments have come in for criticism from Democrats and foreign policy experts, although Trump has not yet responded to Kelly's solemn warning.

The husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2012 but was left with severe brain damage after being shot in the head, Kelly has highlighted the very real danger lurking behind this political posturing.

Although it's not known if Pyongyang actually has the nuclear weapons that Kim Jong Un claims it does, it is known that North Korea does possess a nuclear arsenal - which makes this warning all the more foreboding. His comment has since been retweeted over 17,000 times.
