Legendary football commentator Peter Brackley has died at 67, following reports earlier today that he was 'seriously ill'.

He was most known for commentating on Channel 4's Football Italia during the 1990s, but his long career also included stints with the BBC, ITV and Sky.

As well as this, Brackley was a regular on video game Pro Evolution Soccer up until the 2006 edition, and travelled across the globe to cover everything from the Champions League through to World Cup matches.

The sad news was confirmed by Brighton and Hove Albion FC - the team that Brackley was an avid supporter of.

Albion chief executive Paul Barber said: "So many of us here at the club knew Peter well. He was a hugely talented, knowledgable, funny and, above all else, a good man.

"We will miss him. Our condolences go out to Peter's family, including our colleague and his nephew Paul, and all of his many friends."

Following a suspected heart attack back in 2016 while giving a talk at a charity do, Brackley also suffered another 'cardiac event' earlier this year.

Last month he also missed Brighton's 2-2 draw ith Fulham due to what he referred to as 'water retention' issues, writing in the Argus: "Water retention problems mean I am currently being treated for tree trunk lower limbs that make Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri's thunder thighs resemble Twiggy's pins from her sixties modelling days.

"So, sadly, I had to miss the Fulham game."

Tributes have been flooding in from the sporting industry, with Sky Sports commentator Gary Taphouse tweeting: "Terrible news about the sad death of brilliant commentator Peter Brackley. An absolute legend of our industry. #RIPPeterBrackley."

Former QPR footballer Rodney Marsh wrote: "So sad to hear the news of the death of Peter Brackley. Genius writer & impressionist & friend RIP."

New York Times' football correspondent Rory Marsh also said: "Think Peter Brackley probably meant as much to my generation - thanks to Football Italia, and Pro Evo - as Brian Moore did to the one prior. A soft, warm, funny voice, one that was part of my life for years. Really sad news."

Rest in peace.
