Mexican Granny And God Helped Team To Beat Germany

Mexican Granny And God Helped Team To Beat Germany

Mexico caused one of the shocks of the World Cup by beating Germany on Sunday - with a little help from this Mexican granny.

'Granny knows best' is one of the great truisms of life. It usually applies to sage life advice and the occasional cure for an ailment, but, if this Mexican Granny is to be believed, it might extend to predicting the football results as well.

In case you've had your head in the sand for the last few days: the World Cup is on and there have been a fair few shocks already, none more so than the reigning world champions Germany being turned over by Mexico.

We had previously attributed the underdog victory to a combination of gritty Mexican defending and a couple of slices of luck, but it turns out that it was actually the work of the Good Lord himself. Well, and his octogenarian helper.

A Mexican fan in El Paso, Texas - just over the border from the homeland - posted a video on Twitter of her grandmother blessing every Mexican player as the camera scanned over them during the national anthems, offering her (and presumably, the Almighty's) support for El Tri in their quest to shock Germany.

Lo and behold, the intervention of the pious pensioner paid off, with a 1-0 win.

The reaction online was predictably hilarious. The original tweet has now been liked over one million times and garnered a further 350,000 retweets.

"I'm 100% convinced my grandma was the reason Mexico won" wrote Paola, the grandchild in question, and the internet saw no reason to disagree with her.

Mexico's keeper, Guillermo 'Memo' Ochoa, was one of the standout performers on Sunday afternoon, keeping the likes of Thomas Müller, Julian Draxler and Timo Werner at bay.

Others implored the woman to keep it up. "She gotta do this every game til we win the cup," tweeted one fan, while another added: "Every game. We need this every single game."

Of course, the ongoing success of the Mexico national team is great for, well, Mexicans, but it might not be good for Mexico itself.

The land that the country stands on shook so much at the cheers that followed Hirving Lozano's goal that it registered as an earthquake in the country.
