MMA has provided us with showings of some pretty grim nasty cuts and bruises. This one on British fighter Jack Mason, however, might just win the award for the grimmest.

WARNING: CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES SOME VIEWERS MAY FIND DISTRESSING

In Gothenburg, Sweden, the fighter was beaten in the first round to Hakon Foss at Cage Warriors 93 and suffered an injury to his eye. The cut is so gruelling to look at, it has been described as one of 'the worst in MMA history.'

The welterweight received the cut after Norwegian fighter Foss planted a knee to his face and followed the hit with a combination of punches and kicks. The referee Marc Goddard stopped the fight and award a win to Foss as a result of the horrific blow.

Now a video of the knock's aftermath was posted by fellow fighter John Maguire, repulsing viewers with its graphic nature.

The incident has seemingly been taken in good form by Mason, though. The fighter, who hails from Chelmsford, Essex, said on Twitter after the bout: "Need to learn some knee defence."

Images of the cut have gone viral, with social media users expressing their absolute horror and disgust at the gaping wound.

One said: "That is the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. It's absolutely horrific."

Another added: "Is that ever going to heal properly? It's only going to keep opening up in future surely?"

Meanwhile, a third shocked person wrote: "This has to be the worst cut in the history of the sport. You can see pretty much everything."

On Twitter, one person with an uneasy stomach said: "I nearly vomited", after watching the video.

UFC star Damien Brown, who's had his fair share of knocks, also weighed in, adding: "Goddam @JackStoneMason that's a nasty one pal. Good to see you still getting after it."

Following the defeat, Mason's record now stands at 29 wins, 17 defeats and a single draw.

The now infamous cut will likely require surgery and a handful of stitches and it's fair to say that the image might well put some people off ever trying their hand at the sport.

The injury might even surpass Mark Hominick's infamous swollen head for most nauseating injury, after he received a blow from Jose Aldo above the eye. Either way, just looking at the gash is a thing of nightmares and a stark reminder of how gruesome MMA can be.
