Wrestling sometimes becomes the subject of mockery, a common quibble being that 'it's not real'. But while the absurd sub-plots may be contrived and the huge punches may not land, there is still a great deal of athleticism and rough and tumble involved. Inevitably, performers often get hurt for real.

Fortunately, injuries aren't usually as severe as one recently sustained by Welsh fighter, Tegan Nox.

WWE

The 23-year-old, whose real name is Steffanie Newell, was fighting in the Mae Young Classic quarter final against Rhea Ripley when her 'knee exploded'. Despite knowing the injury was serious, she attempted to continue the fight, but the pain was too much and was brought to a premature close.

The fight took place in August but was screened for the first time yesterday. The WWE also shared backstage footage of Nox crying in agony as medics cut off her boot and treated the knee. WWE legend Triple H can also be seen consoling the fighter.

Since the fight was aired, Nox shared a message on Twitter, revealing that she had dislocated her knee, fractured her left tibia, suffered bone contusions and torn her anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, lateral collateral ligament and both meniscuses... Ouch... 'Basically my knee exploded' sounds like a pretty accurate assessment.

She also shared a picture of her post-surgery scar and thanked Triple H for his words of support.

She said: "I suffered an injury to my left leg very early on and as soon as it happened, I knew it was serious.

"I tried to carry on as far as I could but a few minutes later after trying to push through the pain and finish the match, it all got too much and the match was stopped. Being greeted backstage by the distraught faces of my friends and coaches was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever experienced and it hurt more than the injury itself."

She continued: "I can't thank Triple H, the coaches, the medic staff, my friends, family and fans enough for all the support you've given me over the past few weeks!

"They've been very tough both physically and more so, mentally, but I've done it once and I'll do it again.

"It's going to be a long road to recovery, but it's already started and I plan on making my return special! There's going to be some changes but they'll all be for the best!

"As Triple H said, 'this is just a bump in the road', this isn't the end, trust me."

Nox was forced to bow out of the Mae Young Classic last year, when she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
