Tim Cahill has officially declared he's hanging up his footy boots.

The Socceroos' all time top goal scorer has announced he's formally retiring from professional soccer.

While he quit international soccer last year, he's been playing with an Indian side. However, at the ripe age of 39, he says he isn't going to look for a new contract when his current one ends.

He told Optus Sports: "I'd love to keep playing, you know 39, had a great stint for six months in India.

"But I'm interested in TV, going to start my A Licence and spend quality time with my family and chill out for a bit.

"It was amazing to play in four big continents. I had a great career and I'm really thankful. I'm someone that massively respects the game and I'll take my time to learn more.

"Coaching is something that's definitely going to be on the horizon."

Cahill has notched up some pretty impressive feats during his time as a professional soccer player.

He scored Australia's first ever FIFA World Cup goal during the 2006 competition and tallied up 50 goals during his 108 games with the Socceroos.

He's played for Millwall, Everton, New York Bulls, Shanghai Shenhua, Hangzhou Greentown, Melbourne City, Jamshedpur.
