Google Redesigns Salad Emoji So That It's 'More Inclusive' To Vegans

The new egg-less emoji will be 'more inclusive' to vegans, who obviously don't tend to chow down on boiled eggs in their salads

Emojis have become such an integral part of our modern language, that it's actually quite a mystery trying to remember how we ever communicated without them. Hell, they're so iconic that they're even now the subject of a movie:

There are some emojis that I'm not even sure I could find the words to replace them with - the cheeky, embarassed monkey covering it's eyes means so much more than just feeling a bit red-faced, while we all know how the aubergine is the cartoon equivalent of something that is usually best left as an innuendo...

But because emojis are such a big element of our everyday communication, that means they're constantly having to be updated to keep up with us.

For starters, there's now finally a ginger emoji, which has come about in response to a petition set up demanding that the red hair colour was fairly represented.

The latest image in the firing line? The salad bowl, oddly, which will be losing its egg.

Apparently the slightly unexpected move is a means of making the salad bowl 'more inclusive' to vegans, who obviously don't tend to chow down on boiled eggs as part of their salad spread.

The news was announced on Twitter by Jennifer Daniel, who the Metro reports is a designer in one of Google's user experience teams.

She tweeted:

Naturally, some people weren't particularly pleased with the controversial announcement, with one person tweeting: "And you are PROUD of this, Jennifer? You people are completely bat-poop crazy raving lunatics. Removed an egg for the vegans? What about people who are allergic to tomatoes? Are you going to toss them as well for the sake of INCLUSION?"

"The year is 2018 and not even the salad emoji is safe," another wrote.

Not everyone was that arsed, though - with one person commenting: "Raise your hand if you didn't even realize the salad emoji had eggs in it."

Following the barrage of annoyed social media users, Daniels added in a later tweet: "Hello carnivores, vegans and everyone in between! Just want to clarify that the goal of salad emoji redesign was to create an image more faithful to unicode's description. 'A bowl of healthy salad, containing lettuce, tomato, and other salad items such as cucumber'. Bon appetite!"

The news also prompted other people to make suggestions about other changes we could make, seeing as we're going for it.

One person wrote: "Google wants to start making inclusive emojis? Turn the gun into a water pistol? Remove the egg from the salad? That's fine. But you also gotta put a bulge in the bikini emoji."

Good point, to be fair.
