Bloke's Tinder Date Buys Him Guitar... Even Though He Lied About Being Able To Play

The shock truth miraculously didn’t ruin their date – the two spent the evening learning the basics and tuning the guitar

Some of you may have told a few white lies when it comes to the weird and (often not so) wonderful world of Tinder, perhaps shaving off a year or two from your age or exaggerating that D you got in GCSE French to make it seem like you're quite the smooth talker.

But rarely do those sneaky little half-truths and, erm, 'alternative' facts actually amount to anything bad - the worst that happens might be a slight eye roll, a gentle punch on the arm and a breezy 'What are you like?!'

One man, however, was left more than a little red-faced when his lie prompted his Tinder date to buy him a brand new guitar costing £140.

Jeffrey Turner, 23, had bent the truth a bit to his prospective Tinder date, Yixuan - telling her he was able to play the guitar as a means of impressing her.

Jeffrey, a Tesco worker from London, had never actually picked up a guitar in his whole life, so when she rocked up at his front door with the instrument, asking him to play, he found himself in a bit of a pickle.

Faced with a shiny new Yamaha guitar gifted by 24-year-old Yixuan, Jeffrey was forced to admit that he hadn't been playing for years, as he'd claimed.

Turns out he'd only told Yixuan Jin, a Chinese student studying in London, he was a talented guitarist as a means of wooing her when they met for drinks in September last year.

Fast forward five months later - and only on date number six in February earlier this year - Yixuan bought him the guitar as a leaving gift for his birthday before he moved to Yorkshire, which she decided to give him when they met for one last time at Jeffrey's gaff.

Jeffrey said: "She told me she wanted to buy me a present before I moved away. I was about to move to Yorkshire so we met up before I left.

"It was only ever a casual thing but it was romantic. I think she liked me more than I liked her.

"We met a few times and she asked quite a lot if I had a guitar. But I was too far down the line to tell her I lied so just went along with it.

"I never thought she'd find out that I can't play.

"She came round to my house and said she would bring a leaving gift. I really started to panic and wondered if she would actually bring a guitar after I lied about it.

"She had the guitar on her back and I just didn't know what to say. She gave it to me and asked me to play and I tried, but just couldn't."

Jeffrey tried to tell Yixuan the guitar was out of tune, but she wasn't buying it and soon realised he'd lied all along.

Miraculously, however, the shock truth didn't ruin their fond farewell - and the two spent the evening learning the basics and tuning the guitar. Dawww.

So nine months on, does that mean Jeffrey is now a guitar hero? Nope, not at all, but he has asid he's committed to learning to play one day.

Jeffrey added: "She said, 'you can't play, can you?' and I just had to say no. I didn't really know what to say.

"I've still got it because she wanted me to have it.

"I do really want to learn how to play it. I'm going to look for a teacher and actually learn."

Jeffrey and Yixuan first met in September 2017 after matching on Tinder, and decided to go for drinks in London where they both lived at the time.

Jeffrey, who now lives in Hessle, near Hull said: "We went for a drink together and she asked if I played an instrument. I just went along with it and say yeah to impress her.

"Then she asked me if I owned one and I said no and told her my dad taught me when I was younger.

"We went out again for New Year's Eve to watch the fireworks in London and she kept asking about it. I was too far down the line to change my story by then, so I stuck to it."

The pair's fling was 'never serious' but after casual dating over the course of around five months, Jeffrey had to break the news that he was relocating to Hessle with his family.

The Yamaha CX40 is now an inside joke among his friends and family.

Jeffrey said: "My mates think it's hilarious. I have been telling the story every time I'm out to visit family.

"It's probably the best Tinder date that anyone has ever received.

"It was just so awkward and I didn't know where to look."

Jeffrey and Yixuan still keep in touch, and there are apparently 'no hard feelings'.
