The UK's most married man has been left devastated after the woman set to be his ninth wife left him for someone else.

Ron Sheppard, 69, had already been married eight times without success but believed that 28-year-old Cristel Lalec would be his 'forever wife'.

However, Yeovil-born great-grandfather was gutted to find that his Filipino fiancée, who he first met in Thailand in 2015, had packed her stuff and left before they could get hitched. He now believes she was in another relationship all along.

Sheppard responded to the dumping by tipping off the Border Agency that Lalec may be remaining in the UK illegally. And they say romance is dead.

'I'm devastated by this, I did everything for that girl and she does a runner, I feel like such a mug," Ron told the Daily Mirror.

"We had no love life, nothing whatsoever because she insisted she was a committed Christian and did not believe in sex before marriage.

"I respected that and hoped at least she would become my carer but she just became more distant.

"She'd just sit there with her earphones in taking selfies and I'd have to shout her name just to get her to look at me."

Sheppard, who first got hitched as a 19-year-old in 1966, became suspicious of Lalec's motives after she 'lost' her engagement ring and started going out more.

Her intention to do a runner became obvious when Sheppard went into her bedroom and noticed that she had taken all of her belongings.

"A friend has told me she met another man since she has been here and is now with him," Sheppard said. "I am devastated beyond words."

He added: "I loved that woman with all my heart, but I thought it was for the best I phoned the police and the Border Agency just in case she was trying to stay illegally."

Sheppard is convinced he'll get married again and believes that true love is 'still out there'.

Meanwhile, Lalec has insisted that she wasn't using Sheppard to get a visa to live in the UK, despite what it looks like.
