Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Meghan, the Duchess Of Sussex, went into labour in the early hours of this morning.

Prince Harry has been at her side for the labour.

An official announcement said: "The Duchess went into labour in the early hours of this morning. The Duke of Sussex was by Her Royal Highness' side.

"An announcement will be made soon."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were expecting their first child in October last year, having tied the knot five months earlier in May.

"Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public," Kensington Palace tweeted at the time.

The new arrival will be the Queen's eighth great-grandchild.

According to the BBC, the baby will be seventh in line to the throne, behind the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and his children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - and the Duke of Sussex.

Harry and Meghan had reportedly chosen not to find out the sex of their baby ahead of the birth, meaning it'll be as much of a surprise for them as it will be for us.

Excitement for the infant's springtime arrival recently built when Harry and Meghan launched their own official Instagram channel under the handle @sussexroyal.

One post detailed the couple's wishes surrounding baby gifts, urging the public to make donations to select charities.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are immensely grateful for the outpouring of love and support in anticipation of the birth of their first child," the post said.

"In lieu of sending gifts, the couple have long planned to encourage members of the public to make donations to select charities for children and parents in need. If you already made a donation, the couple send you their greatest thanks.

"If you are thinking about it, they ask that you kindly consider the following organisations they've selected, which we will highlight here over the next few days: @thelunchboxfund @littlevillagehq @wellchild @baby2baby.

"The Duke and Duchess remain appreciative for your warm wishes and kindness during this especially happy time in their lives! Thank you for sharing the love."
