Fans and comedians have been paying tribute to Sean Lock, after it was announced he had passed away, aged 58.

The comedian was known as one of Britain's finest stand-ups, and was a team captain on 8 Out of 10 Cats and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

He also wrote and starred in the popular BBC sitcom 15 Storeys High.

Earlier this morning (18 August), Lock's agent confirmed that he had died from cancer at home with his family, and social media has been awash with tributes since:

Channel 4 said it had lost one of its 'greatest comedians', who had 'played a huge role on the channel for over two decades'.

Comedian Lee Mack, a close friend of Lock's, said he knew this sad day was coming for a while.

He said: "I've known this day was coming for some time, but it's no less heart-breaking.

"A true original both in comedy and life. I will miss him so much."

Fans have also been paying tribute to the man who has made them laugh so many times down the decades, sharing some of his best moments (some of the clips contains some strong language):

Lock leaves behind a wife and three children.

The statement announcing Lock's death, from his agency Off The Kerb Productions, read: "It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Sean Lock.

"He died at home from cancer, surrounded by his family. Sean was one of Britain's finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy.

"Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children.

"Sean will be sorely missed by all that knew him. We kindly request that the privacy of his family and children is respected at this difficult time."
