Fisherman Spots Hundreds Of Dolphins In Liverpool Bay

It's not everyday that Wallasey looks more like Waikiki

With a heatwave currently sweeping across pretty much the whole of the UK, you could be forgiven for thinking that it might never end and Britain might end up spending the rest of time as some sort of Caribbean or Mediterranean style paradise.

As Formby has now turned into Fuerteventura, and Barrow into Barbados, even the wildlife has changed to suit the warmer weather.

A fisherman out in Liverpool Bay, near New Brighton, has managed to capture some fantastic footage of a pod of dolphins floating in the clear blue waters of the new, tropical Irish Sea.

OK, so there are actually dolphins around UK a lot of the time. Bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoise are actually pretty common in these waters, but it's still rare to see footage of them up close to a boat and clearly enjoying the warm weather as much as everyone else.

The shots were captured by Stephen Bee, a retired fireman and keen fisherman who was out having a wee float and a fish in Liverpool Bay when he spotted the cetaceans. They were swarming around the boat and had obviously discovered a shoal of fish that they were feeding on.

He seems to think that there was a whole load of them, rather than just the few that were captured in his mobile phone footage.

Bee told the Liverpool Echo: "As it was such a nice calm day we decided to take the boat out a bit further to fish.

"After a few hours we were on our way back in, about 15 miles out, when hundreds of dolphins came alongside the boat.

"They were surrounding us and keeping up with us, jumping in the air and looking right at us."

It must have been a pretty special experience. Steve added that he spends a lot of time out on the water fishing, and has seen dolphins before around there, but not in the same numbers as he did that day.

He continued: "I've seen dolphins in North Wales and Ireland before, but never that many in the Liverpool area.

"It was incredible really."

Of course, the waters around the UK are teeming with life, in the past few weeks we've heard stories about sharks being spotted leaping into the air off the coast of Devon, you need only go to Northern Ireland or the North East to see a whole load of seals.

Still, it's nice to know that we have a decent amount of diversity in our seas, just waiting offshore.
