Bad News, Everybody: Packs Of Jaffa Cakes Are Getting Smaller

Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse...

It's not been a good 12 months for chocolate lovers in the UK. Late last year we were hit with the devastating news that Toblerones have shrunk in size, swiftly followed by Christmas favourite Terry's Chocolate Orange also decreasing in size. And don't get me started on the price of Freddos.

Now even our packets of cakes - or are they biscuits? - are getting smaller. McVitie's are now only putting 10 Jaffa Cakes in a box, rather than the 12 we're used to.

To add insult to injury, many supermarkets are still selling the 10-packs, which weigh 122g, for the same price as the 12-packs, which weighed 146.4g. A fucking outrage.

According to the Mail, Ocoado is flogging the 10 packs for £1.19 ($1.60), the same as the old ones. And plenty of other supermarkets are doing the same.

A spokesperson from McVitie's told The Sun that there have been absolutely no changes to the size of the individual Jaffa Cakes, just the amount per box.

He said: "We have taken the decision to adjust the pack size of our McVitie's Jaffa Cakes products. There is no change in the size, shape or weight of individual cakes in the McVitie's Jaffa Cake range."

He added that the company had lowered the recommended retail price from £1.15 to 99p ($1.33), but said: "Pricing ultimately remains at the sole discretion of retailers."

I normally don't condone rioting, but I can't see any other option here, guys.

People on Twitter are equally as furious:

It's only going to get worse, too. According to a report in the Times, pretty much ALL of our chocolate favourites are set to shrink.

Three of the biggest names in confectionery: Mars, Nestle and Mondelez - the owner of Cadbury - have all promised to reduce the size of their products by a whopping 20 percent in an attempt to avoid being named and shamed by Public Health England over the new 'sugar targets'.

By knocking down the size of the bars, chocolate-makers can make their delicious products with less sugar, without affecting the taste or producing a 'laxative effect' with artificial sweeteners. Because let's face it, no one wants that.

Nestle told The Times earlier this year, that shrinking its chocolate bars is 'an effective way to reduce sugar'. Well, yeah, it is - but come on, guys. Life is hard enough without this.
