Four teenagers have been arrested in connection with an alleged incident in which a disabled woman had eggs and flour thrown at her.

Two 15-year-olds and two 17-year-olds have been released on bail after they were arrested on Saturday.

A photo emerged on Snapchat after the attack, showing four young people smirking and laughing as they stood behind the vulnerable woman, who was distressed and covered in flour.

Police have said that the attack occurred after a 'verbal altercation' between the youths and the woman on Friday evening in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk.

A Suffolk Police statement reads: "Police investigating the assault of a woman in Bury St Edmunds have released four males from custody.

"The incident occurred at around 5.30pm on Friday 27 July in St Olaves Road. The victim, a woman aged in her 40s, was assaulted by a group of teenagers who threw flour and eggs over her after a verbal altercation. The woman was severely distressed by the incident but was physically unharmed.

"A 17-year-old boy, who arrested yesterday and two 15 year olds also arrested in connection with the incident have been release on bail pending further enquiries.

"Another 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the incident overnight and taken into custody for questioning. He has also released on police bail pending further enquiries."

After the incident, the image sparked fury on social media, with some people claiming that the young men should be hunted down.

After the initial incident, Police Inspector Anthony Bridgland said: "This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable, and we are treating the matter seriously.

"We know this incident may have caused concern and anger both in the local community and online but we would like to reassure everyone that we are tackling the matter robustly and supporting the victim."

A friend of the victim, Katherine Brame, said on Facebook that the victim was now, at least, 'safe'.

She wrote: "I have to speak out. Today's incident has made me so sad and devastated.

"The lady in question needs her privacy and suffers with an unseen illness.

"She cannot cope with people popping in, or gifts. It's complicated but if you want to help, how about donating to a mental health charity as people with these unseen illnesses go under the radar all the time and they are totally under-funded.

"Then maybe she will get the real help she needs from qualified people. You're all very kind."

Police have asked that anyone with information regarding this incident contact Suffolk Police on 101 and quote the reference 42206/18.
