It's good to have a hobby and a passion, it's even better when that passion is recognised. For one groundsman, this is exactly what happened after he spent 273 hours mowing his lawn.

Okay, it wasn't 273 hours consecutively but still... Over 21 weeks, Keith Smith, 41, rooted his place in history by bagging a trophy for the most impressive grass at the Creative Lawn Stripes Competition.

Keith has mowed his lawn three times a day for three months throughout the summer - all adding up to those 273 hours.

He said: "Mowing my lawn is my passion. I like keeping myself to myself, I don't drink or smoke, and my wife and kids are my world, but this keeps me fit and healthy.

"My wife and kids don't go on the lawn because they're so concerned they'll trample my creation."

This is Keith's third win. The father of two from Great Barr, Birmingham, has previously blown away the judges with a Union Flag design.

His love of gardening isn't just a hobby to him, Keith also works as a groundsman for Edgbaston Golf Club. So, even when heading into the office he can take his passion with him.

Things got a bit shaky for Keith as this summer was one of the hottest on record and the heatwave over June and July threatened to ruin all his hard work.

Keith was far too committed to his love of mowing to let the sunny weather get the better of him, or his garden, and he took things into his own hands.

He said: "I watered it a lot too obviously. At one stage I thought I was going to have to let it go but I kept on watering on.

"If there'd had been a hosepipe ban it would have been a disaster. I'm sure there are thousands of lawns which were wrecked - but not mine."

Keith is so dedicated to his art he actually created the stunning garden pattern using an antique lawnmower from the 1940s.

"I use the antique mowers because they are cylinder mowers and not rotary mowers," he said. "Cylinder mowers give you a scissor like cut, a rotary mower slices the grass."

Keith is a true garden wizard. Do you fancy coming round to mine to do some weeding?
