The ex-girlfriend of Gogglebox star George Gilbey has spoken in court about a time when he tried to 'strangle' her, claiming that she had to beg him: "Please don't leave my baby without her mum."

Wimbledon Magistrates heard how 34-year-old Gilbey threw household objects like a TV and lamp at ex-girlfriend Gemma Conway, before beating her with a child gate.

Prosecutor Alex Ng said: "Miss Conway had an argument with Mr Gilbey. She was attacked by him, first by punching then by various household items like metal objects to her face."

She then claims to have blacked out, waking up to strangle marks around her neck as well as injuries to her eye socket, bruising on her arms and legs and damage to her flat.

"MrGilbey had been at the pub drinking and watching the Cheltenham races," Conway told the court.

"I spoke to him when I was leaving work to say I was picking up my daughter and was with our mutual friend and heading home where another colleague joined us for a drink."

Conway then told the court she returned to the flat in Twickenham, where she found a 'very drunk' Gilbey.

"I could see he was very drunk. His demeanour was glassy eyed, and swaying," she said.

"He gets very sweary when he is drinking. He has a history of being drunk and obnoxious."

After friends left, Conway claims Gilbey told her: 'You're not my mum, you're dead'.

Conway continued: "He lunged at me where I was sitting on the sofa. Put my arms up and he began to attack me with various objects in the room.

"He started throwing things at me the whole time, like my lamp, and candles. He ripped the child gate off the wall and started beating me with it.

"When the TV came at me, that is when I thought I was in real trouble here and I said: 'Please don't leave my baby without her mum'.

"At some point after that I must have blacked out. When I woke up the flat was quiet and I crawled towards the phone, which had all the buttons smashed in. I then searched for my mobile phone in the mess."

Conway added: "I saw no rhyme or reason why this happened. I don't know."

Gilbey and Conway, who met at Royal Ascot races in 2013, have a daughter together, who was born in 2016.

Clea Topolski, Gilbey's defence, claimed that Conway had actually lunged at him because he had been firting with her friend.

But Conway replied: "If that was George's attempt at flirtation, it was dreadful."

Gilbey also made the claim that their relationship broke down due to Conway's 'jealous rage', saying: "She asked me if I fancied her friend and I said that it was ridiculous.

"She then lunged at me, I pushed her away, and then the child gate was thrown at me and broke the TV.

"After that I went to get Amelie, wrapped her in a shawl that I found on the end of Gemma's bed and walked out the house."

Gilbey had been charged back in March, when a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man had been charged with assault, also saying that police were called to the incident at a house in Twickenham.

He said: "A man has been charged following an assault on Friday, 16th March.

"George Gilbey, 34, of Clacton, was charged with assault by beating and criminal damage on Saturday, 17th March."
