Residents from the London tower block which has been engulfed by a huge fire are reported to have warned of potential safety problems several months ago.

An action group from Grenfell Tower are believed to have written a warning in which they said the building could be a fire risk, adding that 'only a catastrophic event will expose' the issues, the Independent reports.

A fire ripped through the building in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and it is being tackled by more than 200 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade.

There are a 'number of fatalities', as well as more than 50 people taken into hospital.

In November of last year, residents of the tower block posted their concerns on the Grenfell Action Group website, writing that they feared there could be a 'major disaster' if a fire broke out.

The post, titled 'Playing with fire', reads: "It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders."

The latest post, written just this morning, reads: "ALL OUR WARNINGS FELL ON DEAF EARS and we predicted that a catastrophe like this was inevitable and just a matter of time."

It also included a list of links to previous posts on the site which warned of the dangers, some dating back as far as 2013.

Residents are reported to have been heard screaming for help as the fire tore through the building.

Kensington and Chelsea Council leader Nick Paget-Brown told Sky News: "Clearly it's an absolutely devastating fire. Several hundred would have been in there. It's a question of establishing how many people were in there at the time of the fire.

"I'm really not in any position to answer any questions about the structure.

"Clearly there's a lot more work to do to evacuate the building and to establish how safe it is."

London Fire Brigade have yet confirmed how many people have died in the blaze.
