Besides death and taxes there are very few certainties in life, but on thing that you can bank on is British weather letting you down.

And in some ways, we deserved it - we got too cocky, became too arrogant. We thought the July sunshine would last forever. We actually believed the days of miserable washed summer holidays were well and truly behind us.

But like the cruel mistress that British weather is, the rug was pulled from under us and we find ourselves caught once again in the midst of the painful descent to winter, and apparently it is coming quicker than you think and will be colder than you can possibly imagine.

Get ready for the Beast from the East Two - the worst sequel of all time.

According to forecaster Piers Corbyn - the brother of Labour Party Leader, Jeremy - temperatures are set to plummet and the UK could see a weather pattern similar to a 'mini ice age', which happened during the mid-17th century and saw Britons hold fairs on the frozen River Thames.

Mr Corbyn told Mirror Online: "An active low-pressure system will move in from the northwest next week, signalling a change to much colder conditions.

"We are expecting this to bring some early winter weather with heavy snow and very cold winds in the north and a risk of wintry showers even across southern Britain."

According to Mr Corbyn, freezing air is set to sweep in from Scandinavia and could stay around throughout December and into 2019,

He said: "This pattern is likely to hold out through the rest of the month and into December with a risk of blizzards in Scotland and the north and widespread snow showers.

"There will be a risk of travel disruption through this period with volatile, stormy weather combined with the cold, bringing a risk of winter thunderstorms and outbreaks of thunder snow.

UK could be set for 'mini ice age' conditions over the next month.

"What we are looking at is a pattern of circulation similar to that which was observed during the mini ice-age."

The Met Office said the country could be in for a bout of cold weather and increased chance of snow.

They said: "Temperatures are likely to be below average overall, with a greater incidence of frosts than usual and any milder interludes likely to be short lived. With more generally colder temperatures, there will be an increased chance of snow during spells of unsettled weather, especially for the north."

Button up, folks.
