A British rapist who killed a woman while he was on home release from prison is on the loose after absconding from custody.

Keith Whitehouse failed to appear for roll call at Leyhill open prison in Gloucestershire at 8.15pm yesterday (Saturday) night.

He was last seen at the prison three-and-a-half hours earlier.

Avon Somerset Police

Whitehouse, 56, is currently serving a life term for manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility after he stabbed 21-year-old Suzanne Bromiley to death in 1991.

Whitehouse beat Bromiley over the head with a brick after forcing her to have sex at knife-point in a graveyard before he brutally stabbed her in the head.

Whitehouse committed the crime while he was on five days' leave from Risley jail in Warrington, where he was serving a 30-month sentence for kidnap.

He is believed to have met Ms Bromiley in Brighton at a day centre for unemployed people before he brutally killed her.

Incredibly, no one looked for Whitehouse - who was known to have a psychopathic personality disorder - for more than four months until he attacked Bromiley.

Whitehouse is described as a white man, 6ft 5in tall of slim build with short grey hair, a grey moustache and a goatee style beard.

He has an eagle tattoo on his left arm and a leopard on his right arm. The killer is known to have links with the West Midlands and Brighton.

In a tweet, Avon and Somerset Police warned members of the public not to approach Whitehouse.

A spokesman said: "If you see him, he should not be approached and you should call 999."

HM Prison Leyhill is a Category D 'low security' men's prison, located in Tortworth in Gloucestershire, England.

Leyhill is a prison for adult men who are deemed 'low-risk', housing non-violent offenders as well as violent offenders who have proven themselves to be trustworthy while at more secure prisons.

Prisoners at Leyhill have the keys to their own cell. Leyhill prisoners are regularly placed into the community to complete work and training placements to prepare them for employment upon their release.
